Drowned World Tour

After an eight-year hiatus from touring, Madonna hit the road in 2001 for the Drowned World Tour, her first since 1993’s Girlie Show and more importantly, the first time she played guitar onstage since her pre-fame days in NYC.

The show was divided into 5 sections- Punk, Geisha/Anime, Country/Western, Latin/Gypsy, and Urban. Madonna picked up a Les Paul for the show’s third number, Candy Perfume Girl and even finished the song with a solo (something we at Axe-Static Process are anxiously hoping she repeats in her next tour!). She finished the rest of the show on acoustic guitar, playing on I Deserve It, Secret, and La Isla Bonita.

In 2000, Madonna contacted Gibson about making her a pair of Les Pauls for her Drowned World tour. Gibson agreed, building two of these custom beauties. Within Gibson, they became known as the “Madonna Les Paul Model.” They were originally made with chrome tuners and hardware, but Madonna decided she wanted the guitars to fit better with her stage costumes. After consulting with John Griswold (her guitar tech), she settled on a simple gold-on-black theme, and he retrofitted the Les Pauls with gold hardware and removed their pickguards. Gibson built two identical Les Pauls so Madonna could have primary and backup guitars on stage. (from gibson.com)

John Griswold says that he would only give her the Backup guitar to play every now and then just to keep it in working order. When she preformed, Madonna never knew if she was playing her primary or backup guitar. Madonna kept her backup Gibson guitar which was later stolen at a venue rehearsal for her Re-Invention Tour of 2004.

After the last show of the Drowned World Tour, Madonna autographed this guitar “Love, Madonna” in gold paint pen and gave it to her Guitar Technician, John Griswold, as a big “Thank You” for all his services.  In 2006, Griswold put the guitar up for auction due to financial loss and hardship his family has suffered from the impact of Hurricane Katrina.
